Not me, not some of us, but every single one of us who chose hope!
Yesterday, we saw the shine of a hopeful fightback beaming not on the horizon far off in the distance, but right here and right now in front of us. A kinder, fairer, greener Britain and Europe awaits us.
Yesterday, 10 years after Yorkshire elected a BNP MEP, we've elected a Black, Muslim refugee standing for the Green Party. Isn't that something? I am proud to wear my heart on my sleeve, and the writing has always been on the t-shirt. 'Immigrants make Britain Great'.
To Salvini. Orban. Le Pen. Farage and the like. I’ve got a message for you. You have tried to wage war on the hard-fought peace of Europe, but you have shown yourself for who you really are: You are the enemies of every European who swore "Never Again".
You may be clinking your glasses in celebration, looking forward to your champagne and truffles in Brussels, but I promise you, whether I’m in EU for 5 weeks, 5 months or 5 years - we will fight you every step of the way. Your horrific brand of scapegoating, fear-mongering politics is already on its way out into the dustbin of history, where it belongs.
Yesterday was about a Green Wave cascading throughout Europe and landing on the sunny shores of Yorkshire for the first time. And we are just getting started!
Some are already worrying that this election will be for nothing. That the next Tory Prime Minister - whichever ugly face they place to front their uglier party - may pull us out of Europe at any cost.
Well, let me be clear. This story will be more than just a fleeting midsummer night's dream in Brussels.
Whether you're a first-time voter or a long-time supporter, by entrusting us with your vote you loudly, proudly and unambiguously said you want to remain in and transform the European Union. You want immediate and radical climate action. You want to slam the door shut in the face of fascism. You believe in the beauty and necessity of immigration. So thank you for your faith, and I can't wait to get started repaying you with my service.
The United Kingdom is going to stay in the European Union and step up - we will take the lead in dealing with the urgent issues of our time. What are the chances of that happening, you ask? And I ask you what were the chances of the little boy fleeing deadly conflict in his mother's arms thousands of miles away going on to represent millions in his adopted home county of Yorkshire today? I ask you to believe not in the impossible, but in the improbable. That is the definition of hope. With that hope - we shall shape the improbable into reality.
However, campaigns aren’t won by an individual, they are won by a team. A massive thank you to my brilliant campaign manager, Louise Houghton, for putting up with me these past few weeks. I couldn't have asked for a better co-candidate than Alison Teal who has always been a great source of inspiration for me and has given me unwavering support. Andrew, Lars and Ann are amazing and dedicated friends and I was proud to share such a positive and uplifting campaign with them.
This may be the end of one campaign, but it is the start of a much bigger one. It is a campaign for compassion, mutual understanding, human rights, and against hate in all its forms. We are building a common world, rooted in the aspirations of the young and set to deliver lasting change for all. It won't be easy, and we will all be needed for this.
Together, we can turn the tide of history!
